Why Sales Hiring Reduces Capability and Results.
May 16, 2026Why real world experience provides such a poor sales training – except it hasn’t mattered until now.
May 17, 2026Sales conversations can easily mistake information exchange for progress.
Capabilities are explained.
Processes are described.
Slides are presented.
But the buyer leaves the conversation no clearer, no safer, and no more confident than when the conversation started.
The real job of the salesperson has always been to advance the buyer’s thinking.
To make the conversation more relevant.
To reduce uncertainty.
To increase confidence in the decisions ahead.
That was always true.
What’s changed is that AI has exposed the difference.
When buyers can already access information instantly, repeating capabilities is no longer enough. Presentation polish is no longer enough. Generic consultative language is no longer enough.
The salesperson now has to contribute something harder:
commercial interpretation.
Every important statement should help the buyer better understand their situation, clarify risk, or feel more confident moving forward.
Not because it sounds consultative. Because that is now the actual standard.
So if you were subjecting yourself to a serious practice routine, you might evaluate conversations against questions like these:
- Did the conversation become more specifically meaningful to the prospect over the course of the interaction – whether that was 60 minutes or 10?
- Did the conversation reduce uncertainty and create greater clarity for the buyer?
- Did the conversation increase confidence in the judgment of the salesperson and, by extension, confidence in the vendor’s overall approach?
Because the modern sales conversation is no longer being compared to other salespeople.
It’s increasingly being compared to the quality of thinking the buyer can already access elsewhere.
