The Building Blocks of Modern Sales Capability
August 20, 2025One person can now transform an entire sales team. That’s the power of Enablement of 1.
August 31, 2025The only safe environment in the future for sustainable growth is an A-Player sales environment. In the next 5 years, sales organisations will need to build teams of A-Players and from within, because in the sales world there is no transfer season where you can pick up ready-made players who hit the ground running – even if that’s what the job posting specified!
To understand what an A-Player Environment really is, it helps to break it down into its components. There are four:
- Clarity
- Capability
- Community
- Confidence (to the business)
1. Clarity: Everyone Plays the Same Game
Clarity means the manager defines the role and how progress is measured with zero ambiguity.
This isn’t about micromanagement. It’s about sales architecture. It’s the manager saying:
This is how we define progress week-on-week. This is how we define risk, week-on-week. These are the small number of metrics we look at frequently.
In a weak environment, everyone does their own version of the sales role, defining progress in subjective terms. In an A-Player Environment, the team runs the manager’s version of the sales role. The what of the role is not negotiable. The how – the individual style, approach and execution – is negotiable.
2. Competence: Fluency in the Value Story
Capability here isn’t just basic sales skills. It’s about being fluent in the company’s differentiated value story and in particular, fluent in the language that defends and justifies that value. It’s the language that attracts your margin and premium.
Take pricing. If you’re a premium supplier, reps need to be fluent in why you command that premium. And if that means saying no to a 10–20% discount, they can’t just “hold firm”, the seller needs to tell the story that earns it.
Again, the what – defend the company’s value – is not negotiable. But the how is down to the seller, and in particular, practice-based fluency in the company’s unique value.
An A-Player Environment prioritizes fluency in differentiation. That’s the most valuable capability of all.
3. Community: Standards Are Protected By the Group
Community isn’t about team bonding exercises or Friday drinks. It’s about shared protection of standards and creating a culture of self-regulation amongst the A-Players you are developing.
In an A-Player Environment, the team doesn’t just follow the rules; they protect the environment itself. They protect clarity. They protect competence. They notice when someone’s slipping and raise the bar again. They coach each other up. They hold the line.
The A-Player manager creates an environment where self-regulation makes up 90% of accountability, and 10% is answerability. The clarity and competence is rewarded with unexpected autonomy. The team rewards the manager by protecting what is being built.
This is how the system becomes self-reinforcing. And this is why three aligned people in this environment will outperform ten unaligned individuals in a traditional sales team.
4. Confidence: Give Confidence to the Whole Business
Confidence in an A-Player sales environment is not just about salespeople who are competent enough to be confident enough. It’s about something much bigger; the sales function gives the business the confidence to go after the opportunities that will cause the growth.
The A-Player sales environment fuels confidence across product, operations, senior leadership, marketing and so on. This is an immeasurable benefit of building an A-Player environment.
When there is a 3 or 5 year growth milestone that requires market creation and net new business acquisition, the A-Player environment is the only safe bet.
