The Pillars of an A-Player Sales Environment
August 21, 2025For decades, sales capability meant “who you could hire.” Your best rep was your system. They chose the story, the pitch, the execution. It worked because business had trained the buyer to buy through the salespeople channel where the sellers set the rules. This “relationship model” worked in a world where Sales was the moat around the company and buyers fell into line.
But buyers don’t just have more and better product or solution options today; they have a far more dangerous competitor in the form of advice options, and Sales and salespeople are struggling to keep up.
Companies that have tremendous potential, unique capabilities, and even a “highly experienced” sales team, are finding themselves stuck with low sales capability that is now holding them back. Yes, “Sales” could be holding you back!
Re-thinking Sales Capability Objectively
Sales capability exists independent of people or personalities. It can be objectively built and observed. It has building blocks. Your salespeople are not the capability, but they plug into it. The 2025+ role of salespeople is to amplify the company’s capabilities. But what is sales capability?
Building Block 1: Sales Architecture
The sales world is swamped – and confused – with processes, methodologies, procedures, workflows, revenue ops and “GTM engineering”. All good stuff – in their right place. Architecture is a much better word than all the others. A sales architecture sees the world through a risk, not an abundance lens. It’s a language and you can read all about it here. Building Block 2: Your Unique Company Language
Messaging is not enough. What you need is language – clear, distinctive, (re)tellable language that embodies your unique value. This is the language of advice, the language of value. It must be captured, codified, trained, and practised.
Building Block 3: Execution Fluency
Selling techniques have been replaced by expert fluency. Buyers don’t care how good you are at “sales.” They care how good your company is at helping them decide. Value begins with the quality of your language. Fluency is a skill – one that must be practised, tested, and reinforced across the team. The bar is rising every day as buyers discover new thinking through AI platforms. Advice is experiencing minimum rising standards.
Building Block 4: Manager Levers
Modern sales managers don’t manage personalities – they manage capability. Their job is to install levers that raise performance, clarify standards, and increase consistency. Great sales cultures are not born from great personalities – they’re shaped by strong capability systems. new
What This Changes
- Hiring: You no longer rely on unicorn hires to invent their own toolkit. Instead, you look for people who can amplify the tools and language you’ve already built.
- Training: You stop hoping reps “get it” and start equipping them with language, practices, and plays that represent the company well.
- Culture: Instead of a hero culture, you create an A-player system where performance is predictable because the capability is shared. The sales capability building blocks approach gives you an environment where people can become A-Players, rather than depending on importing elusive talent.
- Your sales capability system will soon (months to a year) need to include include an “expert studio” capable of representing your story at a one-to-one engagement level with enquirers and buyers. The building blocks need to be in place soon.
